It's nice to meet you :-)

I help education business owners design their business on their terms.

I'm an entrepreneur through and through!  I tried working for other people, but I kept coming back to running my own show.

I believe that there's no one way to do things, and I'm passionate about helping others design businesses on their terms.

I'm also not one for rules :-)

And I'm proof that thriving businesses can be built by adapting, and sometimes ignoring (!) standard business advice.

There's no blueprint.

Let's create our own.

I'm a teacher at heart.

But there are only so many young people I can help on my own ...

I grew up believing running a business would never be stable.

I also thought tutoring would bring no more than pocket money.

And it led me to working for 13 years for employers and running a business on the side, just in case.

When I left teaching to be a full-time tutor, I freelanced as a business trainer, just in case.

It's taken a while, but I don't consider 'just in case' any more.

Running a business is stable.  Tutoring is a viable career choice.

I am earning more than I ever have, and working fewer hours.

So, I took small steps.

I made a deal with my parents after graduating from university.

I'd have a year to whatever I wanted, and then enter the world of work.

So, I checked my bucket list and went to college to learn hairdressing and makeup artistry.

My entrepreneurial spirit was bursting at the seams, so aged 22. I launched my very first business.

I stuck to the deal.

My business was set up, and now it was time to get a 'proper job'.

I became a qualified business trainer, working with organisations of all sizes.

But, after climbing the career ladder and feeling like a small cog in a big corporate machine, I wanted something more meaningful.

That's when I stepped into teaching (my business was still going on on the side).

Teaching was the best and worst career of my life.

I LOVED being a secondary school teacher.

My Mum's a teacher and always encouraged me to do it, but who listens to their Mum when they're young?!

Turns out, I'd found my calling.

But my calling was bad for my health.

Like so many teachers, I was burnt out from the demands from the job and constantly putting myself last.

Now, I get to sing more!

So, one of my hobbies is singing.  I have a band and everything!

But, when I was a teacher, I was physically too tired to do it.  I said no to gigs I wanted to say yes to.  Because school had to come first.  The students had to come first.

Not. Anymore.

I left teaching in 2017 to run my tutoring business full-time, but I did a few things differently.

I kept Fridays to Sundays free so I could do everything I loved - teach, sing and spend time with loved ones.

I chose to put myself first.

Enter tutoring, mentoring, recurring income and passive income.

I know this isn't the done thing, but I love transacting my time for money!

I love working with students.  I love my 1:1 sessions with business owners.

But, I also know it isn't sustainable if I want to save up a house while spending time with my family and doing other things I love.

So, I've build various income streams into my business.

I took my 'what' to coaches who knew the 'how'.

In short, I invested in coaches, courses and automation to fast-track my growth.

I choose to work with education business owners because the more of us there are out there, the more young people we can collectively help.

Do you share my values?

Do you share my values?

I'm honest.

I believe in the power of confidence.

Be ready to feel empowered with honest feedback that'll motivate you to take action.

I don't know everything.

I'll never say yes if I can't help you.

My reputation means more to me than money, so I'll always point you in the right direction.

I'm bold.

If nothing changes, nothing changes.

It's a value I live and work by, so if you like to be challenged, we'll make a dream team.

I help education business owners design businesses their way, on their terms.

LET'S TALK BUSINESS!

I've done SO many things that you could be forgiven for thinking that I can't make up my mind.

But honestly, that's not it.

I believe in doing what we love.  And that sometimes means being brave enough to reinvent ourselves.

I rose to every challenge as I embarked on new parts of my journey.

For instance, when I started applying for 'real' jobs after graduating, employers turned their noses up at me for taking a year out to do something different.

When I left the coporate world to be a teacher, I dropped to less than a quarter of my salary - with a mortgage.

Three years into The Upgrade Project, Covid hit.  I lost half of my business in an hour and my husband was made redundant.

But when you want something, you do what it takes - right?

2004

I was 22 years old when I experienced my first taste of business.

I graduated with 1st class BSc (hons) and took a year out to qualify as a hairdresser and makeup artist!  Anya, my first business, was born.

2005 - 2011

I ran Anya on the side while working as a Business Trainer and Project Manager. But halfway through my career, I was made redundant.  With a mortgage and no job, I had to make ends meet.

So I freelanced and trained as a copywriter.  Fortunately, if I had scissors in my hand, I had an income.

I continued delivering freelance training and secured a contract with the Ministry of Justice.

2011 - 2017

Six years in, I was tired of the corporate rat race.  I craved something more meaningful.  Enter teaching.

To my surprise, the adult training came in handy - my last school involved me in teacher training and project managing IT roll outs.  Anya was still going but teaching was tough - I had to slow the business down.

2017

My life changed.

The training, the teaching, the copywriting, running the business ... my journey helped me put my best foot forward.  I launched The Upgrade Project, housing private tuition and business training.

Unlike in 2004, I had experience and maturity under my belt.  I could design a business with confidence, on my terms and build financial freedom.

2020 marked the end of an era.  After 16 years of running Anya, I closed the doors to let The Upgrade Project take centre stage.
